INTERVIEW

Gothic Angst/www.angst-zine.com

After forming and dissolving The Claw, Maxxx and N0emi decided that they needed to refocus and tackle a new musical challenge. With a new vision in mind and a fresh start, Helalyn Flowers rolled out their first release, “Disconnection.” This set the foundation for the sound that you can hear in their newest release “E-Race Generation.” Their music sounds like a fusion of modern electro-pop and mid-ninties electro-rock. Now on top of the powerful synthesizers and heavy guitars, imagine a seductive female voice. This is what you get when you listen to Helalyn Flowers. Maxxx was good enough to give us some of his time so we will let him tell you the story of Helalyn Flowers and all of the details that come with.

GAW: How did Helalyn Flowers originally form?

Maxxx: In 2004 N0emi and I split-up our previous band The Claw with the intention to give life to something able to fully express our musical needs. We wanted to filter our main influences in our own sound without any direct references to other bands. We wanted and still want to reach our sound and trademark. Not a surrogate but an influential act.

GAW: What does Helalyn Flowers mean and how did you come up with it?

Maxxx:
It was me who came up with the name. These two words instinctively impressed themselves in my mind without a precise reason. I was really impressed by the way it sounds and I immediately thought it was the only right name for what N0emi and me were going to build up in that days. In a second time, I associated 'Helalyn Flowers' with the annihilation of the opposites aimed to the realization of the Self without conditionings or dogmas...New life. Real Owns life. And yeah, it fully reflects ourselves.

GAW: Tell us about your previous project, “The Claw.”

Maxxx: This is absolutely the first band in which N0emi and me played together and there the true roots of Helalyn Flowers lie in. We built-up the band in 2002 and we performed a kind of cross between Nu and Goth Metal. The mark was the one of a live-band since we also had a classic line-up made by guitar-voice-bass-drums. Almost no electronic was contemplated, it was more guitar-oriented. The tracks were not bad at all, even if they make me smile when I listen to them nowadays. The fact is that we split-up because we were tired of that stuff, we wanted to create something really different and personal and the people that played with us weren't able to understand this necessity of ours...And I think they still couldn't now.

GAW: You have said that you are planning to go on a mini-tour. Has Helalyn Flowers done any local performing in Italy in support of your releases?

Maxxx:
We moved the live thing cause of the recordings of our debut-album, but we're planning something really great with the help of our new management. We are making our best to raise it as an event more than an underground gig like others. This is why we are taking so much time to realize it. Why can I do something just because it "has to be done" getting satisfied 50%? One memorable show is something more impressive than 100 anonymous gigs done with a bad organization and with 50 persons in front of you. I know that my opinion may result questionable but I don't care. This is my path.

GAW: Your style has been described as Nu-Electro-Rock. This sound is very reminiscent of Orgy, a group from the mid-nineties. Do you foresee a resurgence of the Electro-Rock sound?

Maxxx:
I really love the way of crossing Heavy sonorities and electronic like the bands of the 90s did and often it seems like Helalyn Flowers come from there. To be honest, I don't care so much of an eventual Electro-Rock revival because I think that everyone has to feel free to sound like he wants. In these days all trends have been exploited as more as possible, so I think that the good idea must rule above all, apart from the sound belonging.

GAW: Does the sound of your current two CDs represent a starting point for your sound or is this where you would like your sound to be?

Maxxx:
"Disconnection" and "E-Race Generation" reflect what we wanted to play in that moment. They show an evolutionary process even if very different among 'em. The surest thing is that we are not that kind of band that repeats itself. Every time we love to risk with something different in the same way Marilyn Manson, Bjork or David Bowie always did. For this reason I don't love in a particular way the EBM/Electro-Goth scene just 'cause of its repetitiveness and excessive exploiting of its own clichès. There's really no more to say. I love the risky choice of a band like Apoptygma Berzerk for example. In fact they've become one of the best Electro Pop/Rock bands all around the world. And the so called "purists" continue to puke on...In the same way they puke on Skinny Puppy cause of their recent utilization of Heavy guitars both on the last album and on live-performances...But those poor fools can say goodbye to write a clever song like "Pro-Test"!

GAW:
Your visual style is edgy, how did you develop your look?

Maxxx:
It's a combination of instinctiveness and a particular care of various technical factors like lights, colours, clothes tie-up etc. We give to our expressiveness an important role as well to the utilization of conceptual particulars. In "Disconnection" we were naked and wrapped in plastic like puppets driven by plastic threads, then we opted for a pinstriped and glammier wear with N0emi licking the Helalyn Flowers' lollipop with the form of our logo and recently like a kind of mythical winged creatures stained with blood that seem to come out from an old painting...Now we're working hard for the realization of new photo-sessions and we're opting for something different again.

GAW:
When can the US expect to see Helalyn Flower perform?

Maxxx:
When some very good management will stump out a lot of money for us! Concerning us, it would be really great. Our US audience is the best 'till now!

GAW:
Is there anything else that you would like to share about your group?

Maxxx:
Well, I want to let you know that in these days we're finishing the mixing of our forthcoming debut-album, so you can keep posted through our official site www.helalynflowers.com and myspace profile www.myspace.com/helalynflowers. We are working on a lot of great projects that will make the difference. Stay tuned!

GAW:
Thank you for your time!

Maxxx:
Thank you for your support, guys, and for this pleasant interview.
