Sometimes a band just hits you with the
obvious realisation that they've got something extra,
that demands your attention and shouts out "We're
different - we're gonna be stars". Helalyn Flowers are
one of those bands. Energetic, original, and very
creative they've produced a dozen or so songs that just
buzz straight into your head! So, in keeping with the
Italian edge to this issue, kaleidoskope found out more
- before the rest of the world jumps on board!
How would
you describe yourselves to someone who has never heard
of you?
Helalyn Flowers ::
How to describe Helalyn Flowers...Listen to us, absorbe
our sound and re-act from the usual!
Helalyn Flowers is something special, which joins many
different styles in a unique, modern and reactive sound.
If you're bored of listen to the same old litanies then...it's
time to find us!
When did you first start creating music, and what
drew you together to form a band?
Helalyn Flowers ::
We really don't remember the exact day in which we
decided to build a band together, it happened in a
natural way. We started our previous band called the
Claw, born in 2002, which style was influenced by Goth
and Nu-Metal.But one day we understood that we needed to
change, to refine our sound and free our creativity to
build something new.So, born Helalyn Flowers. In the
summer 2004 we entered the Temple of Noise studios to
record our first EP "Disconnection". It was like to send
a bomb and wait for the consequences. We're proud to say
that we had a great success, starting from the fact that
we're self-produced and we make everything by ourselves,
promotion, pics,artwork, web site and art direction. We
found most of the support from Usa, Canada,UK and Italy
too! So,after one year, we decided to launch our new
Single "E-Race GEneration", which we'll be available by
digital distribution soon.
What are your main inspirations both lyrically and
musically?
Helalyn Flowers ::What
we create is the result of our musical background, very
vast and heterogeneous. We listen to different genres
starting from industrial, metal, rock, gothic, new wave,
synth pop, electronic and many many more! We're surely
influenced by each one of this styles, but we don't take
inspiration from any band. We're not the typical project
born to build a band like any else! Our way to compose
is really instincitive, images and sounds join together,in
this way a new HF song comes out. The use of electronics
is an essential requisite to recreate our atmospheres,
based on the contrast between aseptic scenaries, and
warmer sounds gave by the strings and the voice.
The lyrics born after the music and the vocals, where
N0emi can loose herself into the sound, and can take
inspiration from the atmopsphere of the song. The main
subject is the mind distortion, histories of virtual
reality or imaginary words spoken by objects. They all
have in common the will to escape from the dayly canon,
and re-find ourselves in our personal reality, which we
don't live making of our life a routine, but that we
live everyday in our minds.
How do
you set about recreating your sound live?
Helalyn Flowers ::
We're still waiting since we prefere to deepen ourselves
in the composition of new tracks, and that we want to
perform at the best conditions. For the live shows Jeez
from Adam will join us. So we think we'll start a
mini-European tour within winter 2007, after lots of
requests from our German and English fans!
What is
your local scene like? Is there anything identifiably
Italian about your scene?
Helalyn Flowers ::
Italy isn't the ideal place to build a band, becouse it
is hard to find support from here. And it is hard to
find serious members with the WILL to become GREAT too.
About the scene, we don't think there's a solid one like
other countries like Germany or England...Anyway there
are lots of talented bands which are tryin' to emerge.
What are
your plans for the next 12 months - will we see a full
album soon?
Helalyn Flowers ::
We're working hard to record a full lenght! Our hard
disk is full of new tracks, just waiting to be produced!
We think that within 2007, if we won't get signed, we'll
produce the full lenght by ourselves, like we did 'til
now.
What are your earliest childhood memories?
Helalyn Flowers ::
N0emi: I've got lots of vacant frames of my past, in
this moment, I remember when as a child i played dance
and I made a show dressed up of green emerald!
MaXXX:: My father who played loudly baroque music
every sunday morning!
What are the artistic concepts at work in your very
striking visual imagery?
Helalyn Flowers ::
N0emi is the one who take care of all the visual side of
the band.
The photographs, artworks and general Helalyn Flowers'
aesthetic are really cured in every single detail, and
recreate by images what we describe in our songs. So,
you can find a contrast in our pics and artworks as you
find it in the lyrics and in our sound too. We generally
use cold and aseptic landscapes and clothes, opposed to
a warm make-up and expressions. Anyway, we don't follow
any specifical artistic concept, just becouse without
the istinct and naturalness, there couldn't born
anything really creative and passionate.
Do you
have any religious /political beliefs and if so what are
they?
N0emi:: My religion: Helalyn Flowers My politics:
Myself!
MaXXX:: I just believe in what my mind and spirit
feel free to go. So, there's not any political or
religious corpus that I follow. I really don't need to
side with something if it doesn't interest me at all...
And it'd take me too much time to talk to you 'bout my
spirituality for sure!
What
are your 3 favourite books, films, and CDS?
N0emi:: Only 3 chance per category? mmm...it's
hard to choose...
Books: Go ask Alice, Tokio Decadence, Girl Interrupted.
Films: Strange Days, The Crow (only the first one, with
Brandon Lee), Dancer in the dark
Cds: Mechanical Animals (Marilyn Manson), Nothing
Remains the Same (Pain), Debut(Bjork)
MaXXX:: Books: "Justine", De Sade - "Il Popolo
Bianco", Machen - "Also Sprach Zarathustra", Nietzche.
Films: "The Silence Of The Lambs"- "Strange Days"-
"L'Inquilino del Terzo Piano" (R.Polanski)
CDs: "Filosofem" (Burzum) - "Pornography" (The Cure) - "Mechanical
Animals" (Marilyn Manson)
If you could visit aywhere in the world, where and
when would you visit and why?
N0emi:: My main target are for sure Japan, Brazil,
Mexico City and USA. I just feel a great attraction for
that places, becouse of many different reasons:landscapes,
different cultures, strange athmospheres...But I've
already left half of my heart to Berlin and London!
MaXXX:: Even if I take my real breath in cities
like London or Berlin, I would visit countries like
Iraq, Iran, Israel, Kurdistan for reasons that I couldn't
explain here.
